In Via Natura and in the whole of Peru we are celebrating! Eleven years ago, the Historical Sanctuary and National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World. We are proud to be part of the anniversary celebration of the Incan citadel!
Since its designation in July 2007, the ancient city underwent a major transformation in the influx of tourists, increasing by an average of 10% per year, twice the world rates.
Machu Picchu was a political, religious and administrative center during the Inca empire. Also declared a Cultural and Historical World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981, Machu Picchu receives about 3,500 tourists per day in the low season and more than 5,000 tourists per day in the high season.
Machu Picchu is an impressive construction that remains intact despite the test of time. The Incan citadel is admired for its privileged location and for demonstrating the ingenuity of the ancient Peruvians.
The initiative to select the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World was led by the Swiss national Bernard Weber. The competition to select the final seven received more than 100 million votes around the world. The list of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World also include: The Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal of India, the city of Petra in Jordan, the Roman Coliseum of Italy, Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro and the Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico.
