Community tourism: the business that moves about US $ 16 billion annually


It is estimated that between 2016 and 2020 the community tourism industry sector will have a growth of 35%. Peru runs a program for entrepreneurs of Community Rural Tourism.

Community tourism, according to the UNWTO, is an industry of about 16 billion dollars. In addition, it is expected to grow 35% in 2020 according to The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

This trend can find continuity if it is channeled correctly and the marketing is improved, since according to Eventbrite and PGAV Destinations data 70% of travelers from around the world would be interested in cultural tourism experiences and of real contact with the local population.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincentur) began with the National Community Rural Tourism Program as a tool to articulate new community tourism ventures.

The objective of the strategy is to increase the contribution of community tourism to local development and poverty reduction.

Peru is one of the most developed and popular markets in the field of community tourism, which is reflected both in its offer and in the institutional work that seeks to improve the sector.

In this group three places stand out: Puno, Cusco and Arequipa. The least worked areas are the Coast, the Central Sierra and the Jungle, areas in which some communities already have a consistent offer while others have the potential.
